The Dirty Dozen and The Clean 15

Have you heard of the "dirty dozen" ?? Well if you haven't, you need to learn about it!! I found out the hard way that some of the "healthy" stuff we think we are eating is covered in harmful chemicals!!

How did I find out??  Well, I went on a juicing diet for 7 days, only fruits and veggies in liquid form. I did great except for the fact that my face broke out in a weird rash..... I did some research and determined it was from the Kale I had bought. I didn't buy organic and probably didn't wash them well enough, so I was breaking out due to all the chemicals on the kale!

Pesticide residue on some fruits and vegetables can be a big issue. In fact, fruits and vegetables on the 'highest levels' list contain 47 to 67 pesticides per serving!! HORRIBLE!! You bet your butt I buy organic now! Buying organic, in-season produce from your local market is the best way to know it is free of pesticides. If you are on a limited budget, look for organic choices for the produce your family eats the most. the benefits of eating organic food go straight to the farm, where no pesticides and chemical fertilizers are used to grow the organic produce shipped to grocers. That means workers and farm neighbors aren't exposed to potentially harmful chemicals, it means less fossil fuel converted into fertilizers and it means healthier soil that should sustain crops for generations to come. For individuals, organic food also has benefits. Eating organic means avoiding the pesticide residue left on foods, and it may even mean more nutritious varietals, though research into that subject has yielded mixed results. While there are few if any proven health impacts from consuming trace quantities of pesticides on foods, a growing number of people take the precaution of avoiding exposure just in case, particularly in the cases of pregnant women (growing babies are exposed to most of the chemicals that mom consume) and the parents of young children. It is estimated that individuals can reduce their exposure by 80% if they switch to organic when buying these 12 foods.

So I figured this little pictures/poster would be very good for anyone that doesn't know about the "dirty dozen" or "clean 15" ... The list varies every year depending on what crops used more chemicals or not, but for the most part these are the ones to look out for.

Also check Whats On My Food, a project of the Pesticide Action Network that makes the same USDA pesticide residue testing data available in an easy-to-use database.

Sweet Nothings

So I am sitting in a dark room while both my Roberts are fast asleep, going through pictures from yesterday. The fact that Robby is walking in all but maybe 2 of them..... I am reminded how fast time is going by. I am lucky to be home with him and able to experience new things with him. I just cant help but feel as Robby gets older and he learns how to make a bigger mess out of everything, its bittersweet. Soon he will be to occupied with other stuff to mess up the kitchen with all the pots and pans while I wash dishes or rip all of his clothes down in the closet while "helping" me find an outfit for him to wear. I'll even miss all the times I catch him sitting in front of our dogs kennels calling for them (whether they are in there or not) ......

I will miss him being so little and innocent.

Ps I will post Thanksgiving pictures next week!!

Flashback Friday No. 2

This photo was taken in the summer of 2009, I am sitting in Central Park in NYC. I had a fabulous day that day! It was hard to choose just one photo. I was in Philadelphia visiting family and found a bus that will take me to NYC for the day and take me back for like 20bucks! So I went there alone and got lost in that amazing city! I was pretty broke and spent the last of my vacation money on food and few souvenirs. I took a nap in the park under a wonderful shade tree, got purposed to by a creepy foreign man, had lunch with a friend, and got to take the subway! I had blisters on my feet from walking and it rained a little before I made it back to Philly. It is a day that I will never forget! I really hope I get to visit again soon and show Robert and Robert Jr how amazing it is!!!

P.S.
HAPPY BLACK FRIDAY !!
If you risked your life today and went to the stores for those amazing sales, I'm impressed... the people out there are bananas about those sales!!

Simmering Stovetop Potpourri - Home Remedies

Its that time of the year again, where we get to indulge ourselves in so many great things !! I love the smells of Christmas almost as much as I love Christmas itself. I just love to fill our house with real smells, not the chemically filled and expensive smell of candles. If the house isn't filled with the aroma of a feast being made then you will for sure find a pot of stove top potpourri in our kitchen!! It is so simple and if you cook/bake regularly like I do, then you most likely have the ingredients in your kitchen already.  I will post of few different recipes because some of you might get tired of the same smell, although I love the first one and never tire of it!

What you will need:
Orange Peels(or the whole orange) or Apple
Whole Cloves ( 1/4 cup)
Water
Cinnamon Sticks (3-4 sticks)
Nutmeg (half a teaspoon -ish)

Now all you need to do is slice the orange or apple into 4 or 5 pieces, then put all the ingredients in a pot and simmer. Just make sure to keep checking the water level and add more water as you go. It should last a all day!

I was short WHOLE cloves :( so I did ground cloves, not as strong of a scent but still great!

Here are a few other ones you can try! Whatever smells you like the best just try it out, make your very own smell and enjoy it all year round.

SIMPLE RECIPES

vanilla [a few drops]
orange peels

or
dried lavender
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. whole cloves
 1 cinnamon stick

or
2 cinnamon sticks
peel from 1 lemon
fresh rosemary
whole cloves

or
apple
2 cinnamon sticks

or
1 apple sliced
2 tbsp. ground nutmeg
2 cinnamon sticks
2 tbsp. whole cloves
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. dried orange peel [or fresh peel]

 or
5 – 6 cinnamon sticks, broken
1 tbsp. lemon peel
1 tbsp. orange peel
1/2 cup whole cloves
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1/4 cup whole allspice
1 tbsp. bay leaf spices
2 slices of apples, optional

Happy Holidays!!
